What is Arc Flash?
Insulation properties of air become poorer with moisture content and conductive particles in the air. If the resistance of air reduces to a level when it cannot resist current to flow in an electrical system between a conductor at higher voltage to a conductor at lower voltage or at ground, there is an electrical breakdown. This breakdown causes arc flash.
The strength of arc flash depends upon fault current flows. Arc flash with voltage above 400 Volts and thousands of amperes are dangerous which can cause substantial damage, fire and injury to people working nearby.
Reasons of Arc Flash
Following are some of the common reasons for arc flash:
* improper tools,
* electronic equipments,
* work techniques, and
* poor maintenance of equipments
The chances of accidents are high while maintaining or testing live equipment and test probe or screw driver short live phase to ground or to another phase.
Effects of Arc Flash
Brilliant light and rapidly expanding superheated vapor produced by the arc causes serious injury or damage. For instance, the intense UV, visible light and IR light produced by the arc can result in eye damage to the people working nearby. Moreover, it can also burn human skin and clothes. Explosive loud sound and pressure developed can damage your ears as well as your brain.
High pressure results into flying equipment and metal pieces can injure working in the vicinity.
Protect workers from electrical shock hazards!
If it’s necessary to work live, just follow the regulations outlined in NFPA 70E arc flash standard for electrical safety in the workplace!
Electrical safety requirements for employees are a must to prevent injury and death from fire and burns mostly resulting due to arc flash. It is therefore crucial to have arc flash safety training program incorporated with selected workers in the company. We facilitate you getting familiarized with arc flash study and the importance of NFPA 70E, OSHA 1910, and new Canadian CSA Z462 Arc Flash standards to be considered during arc flash training.
Reducing the Risk of Arc Flash with Proper Identification and Knowledge
The risk of arc flash can be reduced with proper arc flash study, identification and knowledge. You may come across arc flash videos as well as arc flash training meant for reducing the risks of hazards. So, you need to know what arc flash is, the reasons and its effects.
Cover both arc flash and electrical shock hazards in employee training and work procedures
Arc flash training ensures getting work place safety which is one of the basic rights of every employee. Proper training helps workers to avoid personal injury or loss of life due to poor setup. Arc flash training is very useful in production facilities where the risk of arc flash and electrical short circuit is high.
Many private companies are available to analyze your factory, prepare detailed report, label various equipments, provide nfpa 70e clothing and train your selected workforce to carry electrical maintenance safely. Also there are companies to provide arc flash analysis and hazard software that ensures your factory to strictly follow government regulations and provide safe environment for your workforce. Many software companies offer arc flash hazard solutions and calculate safe flash boundaries.
Electrical safety training – familiarizing with arc flash and NFPA70e arc flash standard analysis
It is important to have the concept of arc flash safety training program incorporated with selected workers in the company. It is also important to educate and supply the electrical community with NFPA 70E and OSHA 1910 subpart S compliance knowledge and products.
